This question was posted on the KnitU knitting email list, and this was my response. The knitter was asking if you knit one item at a time or if you had different projects going at once.

"Does anyone else stick to the one at a time process, or how do you manage

several?" a knitu reader

My reply:

I'm not a one at a time person. I have several projects going at the same time, for a couple of reasons. First, I always have projects with different sized needles and different weights of yarns going at the same time. This is to protect my hands and wrists. I rotate working on something on very small needles, then medium sized needles, then large needles and chunky yarn. But I also have projects ranging from simple to complex. Sometimes I just need to relax with some mindless garter or stockinette stitch. Sometimes I'm ready to tackle a more complicated pattern with some complex pattern, or shaping where I have to pay attention. But I confess that I will work on something and then put it down when I get to a part I'm not sure how to do. It may marinate for a week, month or longer, until I either read the answer on this list, ask someone for help, or figure it out on my own. Finally, I have projects going based on portability. I have things that I can take with me to school, (I'm in nursing school), the doctor's office, sitting in the car pool line at my son's school, etc. as well as projects that are too complicated to take anywhere, or too large (like the back of a sweater) to knit anywhere but sitting on the couch in front of the t.v. So to answer your question, I keep several projects going and choose which one I am going to work on based on my mood, and how well I think my hands and wrists are going to take it. As others have said on this list, for me knitting is about the process, not about finishing objects, therefore I don't put pressure on myself to finish anything. As a result, I have very few finished objects, but many works in progress, but that's okay with me. I just try not to promise anyone I'm going to make them something, instead surprising them with a FO when I get it done!
